VPS security checklist

A VPS gives you control, but it also requires proper security hardening.

  1. Change the default root password.
  2. Create a non-root user where possible.
  3. Use SSH keys instead of password login.
  4. Enable a firewall.
  5. Keep the operating system updated.
  6. Disable unused services and ports.
  7. Install malware and brute-force protection where appropriate.
  8. Take regular backups.
